End-System Approaches to Energy Consumption Efficiency for Content Distribution Service in Information-Centric Networking

Instead of the traditional IP network that provides host-based connectivity to users, the research of Information-Centric Networking (ICN) that provides content-based connectivity to users has recently become increasingly attractive. ICN is expected to especially improve communication efficiency in the area of content distribution, however, the study of energy consumption efficiency is not sufficient when the traffic of content distribution increases. The research of energy consumption efficiency of ICN is also concentrated on the intermediate networks (for example limit of router's functions, the efficiency of its caching, etc.). Some great challenges on the end-system energy consumption efficiency still remain. In this paper, we make a study for energy consumption efficiency based on the collaboration between ICN and end-system. Three approaches we considered are (i) improvement of network resources utilization efficiency through the proximity link communication, (ii) improvement of the application energy consumption efficiency through metadata that includes energy power consumption efficiency of contents, and (iii) network resource management through the information from contents utilization efficiency obtained from application. Finally, for the approach (i), we will introduce prototype of energy-aware P2P video streaming system for ICN.
