This article focuses on the U.S. DOT's Intelligent Vehicle Initiative (IVI) program and what is anticipated for the year 2001 and beyond. It discusses the flagship initiative of "joint governance" which will lead to a greater sharing of intellectual property with the public. In addition, the DOT will be able to expand its major ITS partnerships beyond the U.S. "Big Three" automakers. The IVI will also focus more on areas related to human factors, driver workload, driver distraction, applications for light vehicles, and infrastructure initiatives. The article discusses "TEA-22", commonly referred to as the successor legislation to TEA-21. In this new legislation, it is expected that there will be a greater emphasis on cooperative vehicle-highway systems and vehicle-highway automation.
