National publication patterns and citation impact in the multidisciplinary journals Nature and Science

The Journal Nature began publication in 1869 and Science magazine in 1880. Since that time these multidisciplinary journals have achieved the status of perhaps the most widely read science journals in the world. Some quantitative aspects of the publication patterns in these journals were dealth with in a few previous studiesJ s In. this flash we examine the distribution of n~tional publication productivity and citation impact in the two weeklies during the 1981-1985 five years period. For the comparat!ve assesment o f citation impact we used the relative citation rate (RCR), a scientometric indic~ator we devised previously and used in a series of evaluative studies. 6'7 This indicator is computed as follows:
