Acute deterioration of mental status following epidural blood patch.

n 1960, Gormley (1) originated the concept of treating postlumbar puncture headache (PLPH) by I "patching" the cerebrospinal fluid leak with autologous blood injected into the epidural space. DiGiovanni and Dunbar (2) further elaborated on the procedure commonly used today for performing an epidural blood patch (EBP). Several retrospective studies have confirmed the safety and efficacy of this treatment (3-8). We report a case of acute deterioration of mental status beginning 24-36 h following an EBP for treatment of PLPH.
