THE COMMON CALIFORNIA FREEWAY CLOVERLEAF INTERCHANGE, WITH OR WITHOUT COLLECTOR ROADS, ALWAYS HAS A WEAVING SECTION 400 TO 500 FT. LONG. FREQUENT OBSERVATION OF TRAFFIC CONDITIONS ON THESE WEAVING SECTIONS INDICATE UNSATISFACTORY OPERATION. THE NORTHBOUND LANES OF THE BAYSHORE FREEWAY /ROUTE 68/ AT WHIPPLE AVENUE, A TYPICAL CLOVERLEAF OPERATION, WAS STUDIED' /1/ TO DETERMINE SOME OF THE BASIC CHARACTERISTICS OF THE OPERATION OF THE WEAVING SECTION, /2/ TO EVALUATE THE EFFECTS OF STRIPING A WEAVING LANE TO ENCOURAGE GREATER USE OF THE AUXILIARY LANE, AND /3/ TO TEST THE FEASIBILITY OF GATHERING DATA THROUGH TIME-LAPSE PHOTOGRAPHY AND ITS ADAPTABILITY TO OTHER STUDIES OF THIS TYPE. THE WESTBOUND SECTION OF THE HOLLYWOOD FREEWAY AT THE FRANKLIN AVE. MERGE WAS STUDIED FOR FLOW CHARACTERISTICS OF ON-RAMP TRAFFIC.
