The Effect of Details on the Recall of Major Ideas in Text

Four experiments were conducted to examine the effect of details on readers' recall of major ideas in text. With both artificial and natural texts, the presence of details enhanced recall of major idea units. Results are discussed in terms of an elaboration hypothesis.
