Recurrent Phase Unwrapping for Carrier Synchronization in Software Defined Radio

Coherent receivers require precise phase and frequency synchronization of the received carrier signal, in order to achieve good demodulation characteristics. Traditionally carrier synchronization is performed by adjusting the phase of the carrier signal using Costas Loop circuitry. Software-defined radio enables processing of demodulated baseband signal, thus carrier synchronization needs to perform digitally in the baseband. This paper represents phase synchronization for IEEE 802.15.4 coherent receiver implemented using software defined radio, which is based on recurrent phase unwrapping algorithm. Results show that this type of carrier synchronization achieves good results even under low signal-to-noise ratios.
