This paper presents the results and conclusions of different real traffic evaluation studies on Autonomous Intelligent Cruise Control (AICC) carried out within the scope of PROMETHEUS. These studies show that AICC: (1) is perceived as a comfort oriented and safety enhancing driver assistance system; (2) implies a high amount of user acceptance; (3) reduces mental workload; (4) can cause modifications to driver behaviour; and (5) can lead to a harmonization of headways. These results indicate that the effects of AICC upon driver behaviour are likely to be mostly positive. For the covering abstract see IRRD 868006.
