Complementary half controlled converter for directly-driven PM synchronous generator in wind power generation application

In order to reduce the cost of a wind power generation system, a new configuration using complementary half controlled converters for the PM synchronous generator is proposed. The unit power factor operation control and current coordinated control is applied to the two half controlled generator-side converters to reduce the harmonic current of the generator and improve its operation performance. The grid voltage oriented control is applied to the grid-side converter to regulate output power factor of wind power generation system. System simulation results demonstrate that using the proposed new scheme, the generator is capable of always keeping unit power factor operation and obtaining the reasonably low THD of the generator current at the steady-state and dynamic process both in the independent control of grid-connected active power and reactive power.
