Left-Handed Electromagnetism in a Metallo-Dielectric Photonic Crystal; A Numerical Analysis

This work presents a numerical study of a metallo-dielectric structure presenting left-handed electromagnetism. A two-dimensional photonic crystal (PC) consisting in square lattice of dielectric cylinders with high permittivity possess a strong induced magnetic activity, presenting a negative permeability at microwave frequencies. By interlacing this PC with an array of thin metallic wires, presenting a negative permittivity below a certain cutoff frequency, one obtains a system with an effective negative refraction index. The left handed electromagnetic wave propagation in this system is demonstrated by numerically computing its reflection and transmission spectra and by putting in evidence the negative phase advance of the propagating wave
