Combined static VAR compensator and PV-inverter for regulating voltage in distribution systems

In this paper, a combined static VAR compensator (SVC) and photovoltaic (PV) system is proposed to properly manage the voltages in distribution systems. The SVC is incorporated into the PV system for allowing further reactive power supply, thereby effectively preventing voltage rise/drop caused by the intermittent generation of PV. The reactive power capabilities of SVC and the inverter of PV are managed by a cooperative control method. The 11 kV 119-bus large-scale distribution system is used to verify the effectiveness of the proposed combined system. A 24-hour simulation is performed considering load and PV variation. The simulation results demonstrate that the combined system can completely solve the voltage regulation problems with high PV penetration.
