The design and development of manipulators pose difficult cost/performance trade-offs. Through its background and experience General Electric has developed a product line of Man-Mate® Industrial Manipulators. However, the published state of knowledge of manipulator performance is not broad or deep enough to provide a ready means for the designer to prescribe design parameters for a new or a special purpose manipulator, such as proposed for the NASA Space Shuttle.
