Automated design of truss and frame geometry

Abstract It is shown that the optimization of truss and frame structures where layout geometry variables are included as design variables is inherently poorly scaled and that a two-step procedure can be used to overcome this problem. Using a standard optimization package this procedure is used to find the optimal geometry and sizing of a two-dimensional and a three-dimensional frame structure.
