Application of variable structure control in the nonlinear string system

The reduction of vibration in an axially moving string is an important engineering problem in the areas of chemical, textile, belt, computer and tape recorder industries. In this paper, the Galerkin method is employed to discretize the nonlinear governing equation of the axially moving string into ordinary differential equations. The approach is based on independent modal space control (IMSC). Variable structure control (VSC) is used to design the control procedure to suppress the transverse vibration of the axially moving string. The controlled responses of the nonlinear system are compared with those of the linear system.
