Compaction Factors for Six Crops

ABSTRACT Amethod to accurately predict the mass of crop in a storage using physical measurements of the crop mass and crop physical characteristics was desired. Compaction factor determinations were performed for six crops: HRS wheat, durum wheat, barley, oil sunflower, confectionery sunflower, and oats. Classification factors investigated were; the year the crop storage was measured, the use of a grain spreader during filling, availability of aeration, absence or presence of a cone on the crop, and the proximity of a railroad. These variables were tested but were not significant in any of the models. None of the physical measurement or crop physical characteristic variables were found to be significant in the models for HRS wheat, oats, or confectionery sunflower. A significant relationship was found for barley and oil sunflower. The model for barley is based on the wet basis moisture content of the crop. The oil sunflower relationship was based on the wet basis moisture content and the depth of the crop.
