Low-Loss Switched Capacitor Voltage Balancing Circuit and Its Design Considerations

This paper proposed a cost-effective and low-loss alternative to the balancing resistors typically used to balance voltages of series-connected capacitors in a DC bus. The proposed circuit uses switched capacitors voltage balancing circuit with a simple open loop square wave control. The performance indicators of this proposed circuit are identified, analyzed and calculated. Design tradeoffs are studied to allow the use of low-cost components without compromising the system performance. Simulation and experimental results are provided to verify the effectiveness of the proposed voltage balancer
