Mechanics of Continuous Solids

This chapter introduces notation necessary for designing flexible pavements using mechanics. In addition, mathematics concepts necessary for the purpose of modeling flexible pavements are reviewed. The independent variables \( \vec{x} \) and t are described, and field variables are introduced for the purpose of modeling the performance of flexible pavements. A number of field equations are also introduced that must be satisfied in order to predict the performance of flexible pavements.
