The gravity anomaly of a dipping prism

Abstract The analytic expression of the gravity anomaly of a homogeneous, dipping prism is given. The prism has horizontal upper and lower surfaces, two opposite, vertical surfaces and two opposite, inclined surfaces. The gravity anomaly of a rectangular prism and of a two-dimensional, thick plate are included as special cases of the dipping prism formulae. Some example profiles and contour maps of gravity anomalies over dipping prisms are also given. The main conclusion arrived at is that whereas the horizontal dimensions of the prism can be well estimated from the contours, the exact position of the prism can be determined only if the dip is known.
