Monte Carlo calculation of energy deposition by the nucleon-meson cascade and Total-Absorption-Nuclear-Cascade (TANC) counters

Abstract The energy deposited by the nucleon-meson cascade is calculated using a Monte Carlo method taking into account ionization energy losses of charged particles, nuclear excitation energies, and the energy deposited by electromagnetic showers initiated by decaying π° mesons. The calculation is applied to TANC-counters, and the performance of these counters is calculated for incoming protons with momenta between 8 and 100 GeV/c. The Monte Carlo results for 8 GeV/c protons agree qualitatively with experimental results for 8 GeV/c pions.
