Finite element modeling of bra fitting

Abstract Every woman's breast shape is unique, so it is hard to find a ready-made bra that fits perfectly. Commercial software has been claimed to simulate virtual bra fit based on adjustable avatar size and fabric mechanical properties. However, the body was assumed to be rigid and the bra materials were oversimplified. Finite element modeling has been widely used in product engineering, but its application to bra design is still in its infancy. The success of a finite element model of bra fitting requires a realistic body model with the correct settings for the material properties of the thorax, breasts, and skin. The breast boundary and its loading condition should be specifically defined. The types of mesh, elements, and the pretension of the bra components need to be systematically researched to make the bra-body contact model run successfully to predict bra displacement, stress, and force distribution. This chapter provides a critical review of previous research and introduces new methods to create more realistic finite element modeling of bra fitting.
