A TRIAL INSTALLATION OF CORNER-CUBE DELINEATORS: CALDER HIGHWAY, GISBORNE TO WOODEND

The investigation was conducted to evaluate the effect of corner cube delineators as compared to currently used standard reflective delineators on night-time accidents and to determine the degradation in reflective performance due to dirt accumulation. The lowest performance was recorded from white reflective strip delineators while red corner cubes gave the best performance, particularly in wet conditions. A drop of 60% in night-time accidents was recorded where corner-cube delineators were fitted compared to a 21% accident rate drop on a comparable section of highway using conventional methods of delineation. /TRRL/
