PURPOSE: A memory device and method of operating the same are provided to have a bipolar property by including a bipolar memory element. CONSTITUTION: In a memory device and method of operating the same, a memory cell(MC1) comprises a bipolar memory element(M1) and first and second switching elements(S1,S2). The switching direction of the first and second switching element is opposite to each other. A first electrode(E1) is connected to the first switching element. A second electrode(E2) is connected to the second switching element.
