Generalised cylinders from local aggregation of sections

Abstract This paper describes a segmentation algorithm for three-dimensional objects. The input data is a three-dimensional lattice of points, where the object is easily separable from its background. The output description is in terms of elliptical straight cylinders and spatial relationships among them. The algorithm is based on local examination of slices and on aggregating them into individual cylinders according to similarity criteria.
