Two Examples of Severe Fetal Disease Due to ABO Incompatibility

From the Department of Pediatrics, Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, Philadelphia, Pa. 19104. IN 1944, Halbrecht demonstrated that jaundice on the first day of life, due to hemolytic disease of the newborn was frequently associated with ABO incompatibility between fetus and mother. Earlier workers believed that all types of ABO heterospecific pregnancy could result in ABO HDN, but later large-scale investigations have made it clear that this disease is virtually limited to group 0 mothers with hetcrospecific infants.2> 3 The antibodies which are associated with ABO hemolytic disease are of the IgG (gamma-G) or 7-S type. These are incomplete antibodies,4-~ and
