Distribution Network planning is a complex combinatorial optimization problem.Artificial fish swarm algorithm(AFSA) based on the simulation of fish swarm is one of the intelligent meta-heuristics.In this paper AFSA is applied to the planning of the middle-voltage power distribution network. In order to minimize network annual expenditure,a mathematic model is established.Based on artificial fish optimization framework, according to the distribution of radioactive binding characteristics, the artificial fish swarm algorithm is designed for distribution network planning. All possible routes are taken as optimization variables using the binary coding.Initialization method of artificial fish population with "root node fusion" is included in graph theory. An optimization strategy on the basis of "prey, swarm and follow" operators that obeys the rule of guaranteeing "basic radiation" to ensure the majority the solution is put forward in the optimization process.A 10-node 10 kV distribution network planning example optimization result shows that the proposed method can obtain the optimal solution promptly and has strong global-search ability.AFSA is feasible and effective in planning for the distribution network.
