length comprehensive scholarly study of the early 1960s since Jack Gray and Patrick Cavendish's Chinese Communism in Crisis (Pall Mall, 1968). Ahn's book, therefore, would be my choice to recommend to a student or colleague who wants an overview of the origins of the Cultural Revolution—although I would add the warning that the field has begun to move beyond the models of two-line struggle and cyclical change presented in it. To use his own terms, Mr. Ahn may not have transformed our understanding of the origins of the Cultural Revolution, but he has done a good job of consolidating it.
