KIVA COAL: A modified version of the KIVA program for calculating the combustion dynamics of a coal-water slurry in a diesel engine cylinder

This report describes the KIVA COAL computer program, designed to calculate the time evolution of the combustion of a coal-water slurry in the cylinder of a diesel engine, using a Cray computer. This program, which has been obtained by modifying the Los Alamos KIVA program, developed by Amsden et al. for studying the combustion of conventional liquid-fueled diesel engines, calculates the detailed in-cylinder gas dynamics, spray motion, slurry evaporation, and devolatilization of the coal particles, char combustion, chemical reactions with heat-release, and the radiative heat transfer processes that occur in engine operation. The KIVA code can calculate 2-D axisymmetric problems and 3-D problems that can be characterized by periodic boundary conditions in the azimuthal direction. The program uses chemistry, char combustion, devolatilization, and radiation heat transfer models developed by Daly in a previous study of coal gasification. 28 refs., 13 figs., 1 tab.
