SIZE DISTRIBUTION OF SWORDFISH LANDINGS IN THE CENTRAL AND EASTERN MEDITERRANEAN

SUMMARY A total of 56990 swordfish (Xiphias gladius) lower jaw-fork length (LJFL) measurements taken from the main Greek and Italian swordfish fleets during the period 1986-1999 were analysed to identify spatial and temporal differences in the size of the fished animals. Results demonstrated that a significant percentage of the landings, which was up to 70% in some cases, was composed of juveniles. It was also found that driftnets target bigger individuals than longlines. No significant time trend in the mean size of the landed animals was identified.
