Working Performance of a Cylindrical Breakwater under Pseudo-static Wave Loading

Cylindrical breakwater is a new type of deep water breakwater which is proposed to be constructed on soft ground with severe wave loading. As it is not long before the trial section was built up,no severe storm has been encountered till now. As a result, there is a pressing need to get to know the working performance of cylindrical breakwater for establishing a procedure or code of design and constniction. Therefore, centrifuge model tests were carried out to investigate the response of the cylindrical breakwater subject to pseudo-static wave load. The pseudo-static wave load was applied to cylindrical breakwater by a newly-developed loading actuator of lateral force. It is found that there was a yielding point of deformation as the pseudo-static wave load is in excess of a certain value, and that the positive and negative excess pore water pressure were produced on the back-wave side and on the meeting-wave side, respectively. The main mode of failure to be proposed in the design of cylindrical breakwater was overturning failure of excessive tilt displacement.
