The Trial of the Catonsville Nine

Note: On October 27, 1967, Phillip Berrigan, Thomas Lewis and two others were arrested for pouring human blood on draft records at the Baltimore Customs House. These were the “Baltimore Four.” They were tried and convicted. On May 17, 1968, Phillip Berrigan, Thomas Lewis, and seven others walked into the draft board in Catonsville, Maryland, took and burned the draft records, then waited for the police to arrive. The trial occurred on October 5–9, 1968. William Kunstler was the lead defense attorney. Verbal emphases (in italics) and paragraph breaks have been added by Arun, as have the footnotes.
