The use of eta factors to describe the J integral : the ASTM 1152 standard for the compact tension specimen

Abstract A J integral expression for the compact tension specimen geometry is the basis of ASTM Standard 1152, which is widely used to represent a material's crack growth resistance. With this expression, the plastic contribution to the J integral for a non-growing crack is related to the plastic work integral via an eta factor. The present paper discusses this representation in the context of recent developments in the J integral-eta factor area and, most importantly, shows that the representation is consistent with these developments.
