Interactive Simulation of Physical Protection Systems for Improved Facility Monitoring

This paper presents the importance of physical protection systems in relevant facilities concerning their safety and security. Use is made of a software platform,(DiD Risk Monitor), for simulating PPS and considers detection, delay, response as well as the personnel at a facility, taking into account their respective characteristics as pertains to the effectiveness of the PPS. An attack scenario is simulated using different parameters for intruders to a facility and the response team tasked to deal with such intrusions. Different attack paths and parameters produce different response team times in dealing with intruders. The result of the simulation provides information on the best means of dealing with specific attack scenarios and by altering the values of the parameters, different scenarios can be realized. An optimum PPS system to deal with diverse attack modes can be realized to properly protect a given facility against malevolent attacks.
