Interactions of bacterial adhesins with extracellular matrix and plasma proteins: pathogenic implications and therapeutic possibilities.

The importance of microbial adhesion to epithelia in mucosa-associated infections has been recognised for a long time. The discovery by Kuusela in 1978 [ 1 I that StaphyZococcus aureus strains specifically bind ‘to the extracellular matrix (ECM) and plasma glycoprotein fibronectin (Fn) launched a new and extensive field of research. Investigations have revealed how microbe:s, i.e. bacteria, parasites, fungi and viruses, interact with ECM components and the importance of interactions with these subepithelial structures in the patlhogenesis of various infectious diseases [2]. In this paper we will review some of these interactions and detail possible targets for anti-adhesion therapy.
