Information systems, services, and technology for the humanities

Humanities computing has grown tremendously since the last ARIST chapter on this topic appeared in 1981. The author points out in her chapter that while many of the developments support traditional research activities, computer-based technologies are opening up entirely new avenues for research, teaching, and scholarly communication. The authors covers the english-language literature that appeared on this topic during the period 1981 through 199O. The term humanities has been interpreted broadly. Detailed discussions of computing applications are limited to archeology, Biblical and classical studies, and philosophy. Information systems designed for institutions such as libraries, archives, manuscripts repositories, and museums which support humanistic research are also discussed
