Abstract The rolling force and torque are the most important parameters influencing the determination of the energy for the rolling process. The calculation of these parameters, with a high degree of accuracy, is the basis for the proper design of the rolling mill and the automatic control of the process. In the present paper, the upper-bound method is employed to obtain theoretically sound approximations. The determination includes many more parameters than those employed by previous researchers. The variation in roll force and torque with roll pass, from front pass to back, as determined by the analysis is similar to that given by the experimental data. In particular, the calculated values are somewhat larger than the experimental ones, but in general do not exceed them by more than 30 percent.
