Abstract The number of Japanese overseas travellers has shown a targe increase since 1985, when the value of the yen rose sharply against other currencies. In 1987 the Japanese government announced its ‘Ten Million Program’, which aimed at doubling the amount of Japanese overseas travel from the 1986 level of 5.5 million to 10 million by the end of 1991. In this report consultant Hiroko Nozawa analyses the growth and characteristics of travel from Japan, describes the structure of that country's tourism industry and looks at the prospects for further outbound travel.
