Residential electricity demand modelling: Activity based modelling for a model with high time and spatial resolution

A detailed knowledge of residential electricity demand is useful for the development and evaluation of many energy efficiency measures in the residential sector. Since different applications operate on different time and spatial resolutions, a model that is flexible is necessary. A Residential Electricity Demand Model is developed, that uses the technique of Activity Based Modelling, i.e. modelling the individual end-use components by modelling various load categories. Time Use Survey (TUS) data is used to synthesize human behavior where appropriate, and other categories are modelled using the Standard Load Profile (SLP), thereby ensuring that the aggregate load of many households is still correct. The model categorizes the households by the number of members, accounting for their differences in behavior and energy consumption. The model is validated against measured data to ensure that both individual and aggregate profiles have the correct statistical properties.
