A Novel Chaotic Model of AC Electric Arc Furnace for Power Quality Study

A novel chaotic model of AC electric arc furnace is introduced, which is useful for power quality study. Firstly, based on a piece-wise linear approximation of U-i characteristic curve of electric arc furnace load, dependeding on the active power consumed by the load, the static model is developed, which can accurately represent the static behaviors of electric arc furnace. The static model is useful for harmonic study. Secondly,a low-frequency chaotic signal is generated via the Chua’s circuit based on asymmetric nonlinear resistive element, using the chaotic signal to modulate the static voltage of electric arc, finally the dynamic model is developed, which can accurately simulate the dynamic behaviors of electric arc furnace. The dynamic model is useful for voltage fluctuation and flicker study. The static model and the dynamic model are simulated in Matlab. Comparing the simulated results with the measurement data,it is shown that the model can accurately represent the power quality problems, such as harmonic and voltage fluctuation. The developed model is valid and easy to use, which will promote the precaution measures study against power quality problems.
