Converting Topology Optimization Results into Parametric CAD Models

AbstractA semi-automatic method for converting topology optimization results into a smooth, parametric CAD model is presented in which predefined 2D shape templates are fit to the optimization results and a surface is swept through the 2D templates to create a 3D feature. This method is repeated for each feature until a full 3D model is generated. This approach to topology optimization results interpretation reduces the time required to utilize the results, helps to standardize the interpretation process, and enables the designer to have control over the trade-off between closeness of fit to the theoretically optimal model and feature complexity.
