The lasers have been available as a material processing tool for more than thirty years. The use of lasers was not widespread initially because of a lack of reliability, power and efficiency. Nowadays the situation has changed dramatically, with laser proces sing being used as part of the production route for many items. In this paper we present a new technique for the laser surface treatment of dimension stones: the laser blasting. The use of a new generation of laser equipment, based on high power diode lasers, allows to efficiently treat the surface of g ranite stones. The results allow to affirm that the laser blasting present several advanta ges in comparison to the conventional mechanical method: there are no mechanical stresses induced in the granit plate, reduction of powder formation and practically complete deletion of noise.
