Phase-shift as a basis of image processing in oscillating chemical medium

Abstract It was recently shown that a thin layer of oscillating photosensitive version of Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction can serve a novel model of parallel image processing. We study both experimentally and computationally the mechanism involved in the image processing by the photosensitive oscillating chemical reaction. We propose a scheme for some operations of image processing in a network of locally connected oscillators, based on phase shift of oscillations. We also propose an improved chemical description for photo-inhibition of the ruthenium-catalyzed version of the Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction.
