Applying operation research methods to identify complex government farm program participation decisions

Abstract Microcomputer software is available to assist producers in evaluating government farm program participation decisions. Unfortunately, deficiencies within these existing computer programs limit the scope of the results for users. This report is a study of the possible advantages for individuals using advanced operations research methods on microcomputers in selecting among available program participation options. The proposed methodology consists of an existing decision-making aid, a typical electronic spreadsheet, and a visual interactive optimizer in conjunction with mixed-integer linear programming. The methodology is presented in a manner accessible to most computer-literate agricultural producers and advisors with a working knowledge of a microcomputer-based spreadsheet and a basic understanding of farm management budgeting procedures. The methodology used is applicable to a broad spectrum of farm management problems existing throughout the world.
