Investigation of antenna array configurations for microwave radar breast screening

Within the last decade, multistatic radar systems have been reported for use in breast cancer detection. In this paper, the authors contribute to this field with a study on antenna array configuration and its consequence on image quality using the Delay-Multiply-and-Sum (DMAS) algorithm. Four different array configurations are presented and tested on a 3-D numerical breast phantom. We show the results for and demonstrate the advantages of symmetrical, regularly-spaced and asymmetric irregular antenna arrangement.
