Dynamic modelling of magnetic materials for high frequency applications

Abstract Magnetic materials are very popular for high frequency power conversion and their operation frequencies are usually in the region of kHz. This paper examines the processing of the ferrites, and the modelling of the magnetic core loss for high frequency operation. The proposed method is a dynamic model which considers the eddy current, hysteresis and anomalous losses. The loss analysis is based on Preisach modelling. The applications of the model, such as dynamic BH simulation, initial magnetisation curve simulation and major loop simulation, are discussed. It is found that the core loss has frequency and flux density dependent elements. Separation techniques were used to examine each of the loss components and their analytical solutions. The predicted results agree very well with the experimental results. It is confirmed that the proposed techniques can be used for high frequency magnetic design. An optimisation method by considering the winding loss and equivalent circuit is used to investigate the situation of the minimisation of the total loss of the magnetic coils.
