Long-term prognosis after cardiac pacing in atrioventricular block.

The long-term prognosis after cardiac pacing in atrioventricular block was assessed by a follow-up study of 48 patients in whom pacing had been introduced 5 years or more before analysis. The one-year survival rate was 8i .3 per cent and the 5-year survival rate was 58 3 per cent. These figures are substantially better than the survival rate reported in patients notpaced. The mortality has been higher in the older age groups. Pacingrelated deaths, which should be avoidable, have diminished considerably with increasing experience. The institution of a special clinic for follow-up of these patients has been largely responsible for the improved results.
