Extensible Markup Language (XML) provides a method for marking the significance of information, leading to the ability to combine information from disparate resources by automated means. At the same time, by denoting the significance of information, XML represents a return to indexing information. Due to its flexibility, it has gained prominence in a wide range of seemingly unrelated technologies. Combining XML with style sheets such as CSS and XSL allows control of the visual appearance of XML data. Document Type Definitions (DTD) provide a method for defining the structure of XML data. This paper presents a simple example of XML and the use of style sheets and DTDs which may serve as a step toward learning XML.
