VSS approach to DC drives control

A system based on the variable-structure-systems approach is presented for controlling DC machine position, speed, or current. The introduction of sliding mode leads to good dynamic and steady-state behavior of the overall system. A method for switching function estimation that is based on control error and armature current information is proposed. An external torque observer is constructed. Simulation and experimental results show that the system motion is predicted well by theoretical analysis.<<ETX>>
