The Student Conservation Planning Service at the University of Guelph is a pilot program that involves qualified students from the Faculty of Environmental Sciences in producing conservation plans for rural landowners and non-government organizations. In this paper, the results of a summer effort to produce plans for properties owned by the Nature Conservancy of Canada is described. Field work was undertaken on ten properties scattered across southern Ontario, to prepare descriptions of vegetation communities based on the Ecological Land Classification system. Other cultural features and surrounding land use were also described, and a list of management issues developed. In the paper, the issues involved in successful completion of the plans by the student team, the use of the ELC system, as well as the typical management issues on the properties themselves are discussed. The partnership between university students and non-government organizations benefits both parties by enabling students to gain a demanding learning experience, while the organization receives tangible products in return.
