Performance Evaluation of Clustering Protocols for Heterogeneous Wireless Sensor Networks

Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) consists of spatially distributed autonomous sensors to monitor physical or environmental conditions, such as temperature, sound, vibration, pressure, motion or pollutants and to cooperatively pass their data through the network to a main location. Many routing, power management and data dissemination protocols have been specifically designed for WSNs where energy consumption is an essential design issue. Since WSN protocols are application specific, so the focus has been given to the architecture. The routing protocols for WSN can be classified in three main categories: data centric, hierarchical and location based. Each of the routing protocol has the common objective of trying to get better throughput and to extend the lifetime of sensor network. The focus of this paper is along the following lines: Identifying the Optimal Clustering Routing Protocol for the Heterogeneous Wireless Sensor Networks. For this, we have proposed a Zone-Based Heterogeneous Energy Efficient Clustering Protocol (ZHEEC) for heterogeneous WSN. We have performed simulations in MATLAB 7.0. MATLAB (matrix laboratory) is a numerical computing environment and fourth-generation programming language. We will show the detail comparison of proposed ZHEEC protocol with other benchmark protocols like LEACH, SEP and EERP in terms of Network lifetime. Finally a best protocol is obtained.
