Abstract A new method for the determination of the minimum chemical distance, a measure for constitutional similarity, is introduced. The method is based on the application of genetic algorithms. This optimization technique mimics the evolutionary process of selection in nature. Results are presented that demonstrate the applicability of this probabilistic optimization method in computer-assisted organic chemistry.
